Autumn Photos just in time for Winter

This year has gone by fast. In the blink of an eye Summer was over and Autumn has come and is on it’s way out as we head towards Winter. So I decided to go out and take photos.

All the leaves are brown but the sky is not grey.

I’m quite proud of this trip. Coming home and looking at the photos, I’m glad I decided to go out. The colors absolutely pop with the photos and it truly does feel magical.

Photography is perhaps the most difficult hobby I’ve picked up; it requires taking the ordinary and portraying it in such a way that it becomes extraordinary. We walk by trees every day but do we ever truly notice how beautiful something is? And if we do, can we express it to others in a way that intrigues, that captures ones interest?

When we think Autumn, we often think of warmth; as such, most photos should reflect what our mind already wants to perceive. However, diffused, soft lighting can be just as beautiful.

A stretched hand reaching out to greet you

It is easy to overlook the little moments and often times we forget to look at the bits and pieces that make up the machine. Autumn simply wouldn’t be if it weren’t for the leaves.

An Autumn stroll is sometimes all we need. To feel the wind blow and the leaves rustle. It’s a time to relax and catch our breath.

As my life becomes increasingly more corporate, I hope I can still find time to capture a moment in time. A moment where I can simply take a walk and hear the birds chirp, the river crackle, and the wind sing. Moments where the rain taps my shoulder in greeting and the sun smiles through a canopy of leaves.

Cheers,

Mike

So far, the reception to my photography has been wonderful. I go out, take photos, and then share them. As far as content goes, photography has been a blast and affords me a post where I can sit back and simply chat.

So these photos were actually taken early August. Instead of the most obvious photos, I opted to wander and try and notice the little things; subjects that you wouldn’t think make great photos.

IMG_0242

Of course, my favorite subject is pathways and I really don’t think people appreciate them nearly enough. It’s fascinating to find walking trails and realize that most, naturally form over time, as one individual pushes forward and others follow. I often wonder why, when wandering through the woods, some areas have trails while others do not.

There is something beyond peaceful about forests. In this shot, it was later in the day. As you can tell, the lighting is intense and gorgeous for a walk. I might have to start playing around with taking photos at different times throughout the day and seeing what my favorite hour for taking photos is.

I never thought much of dandelions until I had a proper camera in hand. A weed to some, an object of beauty to others. While not the most interesting shot, I thought it was still worth adding.

As you might’ve noticed, there is a lot more variety in this post. However, eventually I will need to venture further and plan photography trips to capture the photos I want; retreading the same ground only gets you so far.

And that’s it! Until next time!

Fireworks, Cityscapes, and Nighttime: Adventures in photography

In my pursuit of hobbies that challenge the mind, my newest addition to what will eventually be the death of me is photography. Going out, taking photos and stretching my comfort zone until it pops and oozes discomfort; if I survive, great. If not, at least I’ll have some amazing photos.  Life is too short not to play and play I have.

IMG_0227

Personally, I am disgusted with my photos and I am not saying that for humble brag points. What you see is pretty lights while what I see is camera shake akin to making a double exposure.

IMG_0228

As a first attempt, these are not bad but they could be so much more. Had I been strong enough to lift a tripod, the night might have ended differently. And Thank God I’m too broke to afford a lens with proper zoom because then you might see what I see.

IMG_0225

I almost didn’t go out but decided “why not?” as I do with the best decisions in my life. Steps are steps and even crawling gets you somewhere. I never want to get in the habit of telling myself “I can’t.”

IMG_0215

We are our greatest critics and most give up before something can truly flourish. Success is not a straight line and success is relative. If we believe we can’t, we can’t. If we believe we can, we can.

And the greatest achievements in life are not easy and when achieved, offer the greatest sense of accomplishment. Take pride in knowing you’ll get there and instead of focusing on what’s wrong, always see mistakes as learning opportunities.

A walk through the woods

The city has its moments yet it is a place of chaos. clock in, clock out, sleep, eat, work. We forget to breathe. We close our eyes and take a deep breath, we listen.

IMG_0064

At first we are met with silence, a gentle breeze rustling our hair. We hear the birds chirp merrily as they build their nests. We stop, kneel, and notice the moss growing on the rocks.

IMG_0093

We walk further and find a path. We follow the path, not knowing where it leads.

IMG_0112

We find a creek and listen to the trickle of water. The sun shines through the canopy of trees and we feel its warmth, a blanket of joy as we lose ourselves in the moment.

IMG_0104

Our steps begin to slow, our panic subsides. Time fades as we continue down our path. And for a moment, we see the world through another’s eyes.
